Leaking Thermostat Housing

Well it seems like the leaky water pump that has been plaguing me this year (and that I just wrote about a few days ago) may in fact now be the result of a leaky thermostat housing.  My car has been in the shop since Monday and if the thermostat housing is indeed the problem, I'm hoping this issue can be laid to rest.

As I expressed in my previous post, this is the third time I've had my car in the shop this year to deal with leaking coolant.  The first time it was to fix just the thermostat and have the water pump done as preventive maintenance.  The second time it was to fix the water pump which was now leaking.  And this third time it was to fix, what I believed to be the water pump again, but what now seems to be the thermostat housing.

When they fixed the water pump the second time it did stop the coolant leak for a few months.  I'm thinking there must have been some overlap between the leaking pump and the thermostat housing which made the problem more difficult to diagnose.  At this point I just want the problem fixed already.  It's frustrating to feel like you're paying premium prices for repairs when the actual diagnosis and fix doesn't properly address the issue from the get go - especially when the water pump, thermostat, and thermostat housing have been looked at each time I took the car in.

  1. I have been chasing coolant leaks since we have had the XJ8. First it was the heater lines that run underneath the intake manifold. Second the water pump. Now it appears there is coolant leaking and sitting on top of the water pump housing which is just below the thermostat housing. I may try to replace the thermostat housing myself. The most frustrating thing with XJ8's is that there seems to be no repair manuals available to the public but in this case I can see the bolts so may go for it.
